recital.

what does it mean to be a dancer?

in an entrancing blend of visual and verbal storytelling, six west-australian performers explore their complex and ever-changing relationship with dance and the way it has shaped them into the people they are today. ‘recital.’ follows a rehearsal process as the performers reflect on their identity and growth – both as dancers and as people.

there is terrific skill in this cast, shown through each’s solo dance moments and their unique styles. most impactful, is the image of the cast together at the end of the performance. there is a beautiful conclusion drawn about what they have created together, and the positive influence of their communal experience is clear.

moments like these are what fringe is for.

the main thing i wish to say is ‘thank you’. this show said so many things i needed to hear. as an disabled artist myself who has had such a complicated experience trying to explain, advocate, or hide myself in these spaces, it has been hard to push through for my love of the arts, which is strong. thank you all so much for sharing your experiences and vulnerable moments of your lives with us all. your dedication and genuine heart showed through in everything that you did. your voices are important, and they have been heard. we see you and appreciate you.
