what has been your favourite part of working on ‘all the stars.’?
being in the room with the people involved in the cast and crew. i have never felt as safe and as a part of something than i do in that room. we are all different people who have lead different lives, however, we are all connected through having queer experiences, and it is such a special connection.
if you were to pick one song to describe ‘all the stars.’, what would it be?
one? only one? the one that is coming to my mind in this moment is ‘in my bones’ by margot liotta.
how has your experience of queerness shaped who you are?
my experience of queerness (plus growing up with undiagnosed autism) has made up both the best and hardest parts of me. i always loved so much and differently in comparison to others, often freaking people out. a pattern cemented in my brain of always second guessing myself — thinking i was too much, and now i’ve never really been able to love out loud without hesitation.
more positively, i have a big open heart when it comes to learning and creating space for others, because i know they have existed in their difference alone, like me. i have an intense level of understanding and empathy i don’t think i would have if it weren’t for being queer myself.
which character says your favourite line from ‘all the stars.’?
it’s andie towards the very end of the show, where they talk about queer history! although tessa comes in at a very close second with a hilarious line very close to my heart.
who do you relate most to; andie or tessa?
as a people pleaser (although i am trying to recover) who was also definitely in love with their childhood best friend, it is without a doubt tessa. i am tessa and tessa is me. she was written based on my life i am convinced.
if you could give any advice to your young queer self, what would it be?
so! much! i know the way the world worked had you feeling like you were doing things wrong, but i promise you, the way you love is beautiful. it might not look like love does everywhere else (allegedly), but it is so special and worth taking care of. it’s one of the things that makes you the most you — you deserve to relish in it. you are not wrong. and one day, you are going to find the people who embrace your love.
also… that time you texted someone ‘i think i’m a lesbian’ on your ipod in 2013… you’re onto something.
who is your favourite couple who is doomed by the narrative?
adam and eric from sex education!! they deserved better.
